THE LETTER FROM CEDAR | OCT 2021

Dear supporters,

The ten poorest countries in the world today mainly lie in Africa. They have been suffering from civil wars, political instability, or internecine strife and hatred for many years. All these undermined their capacities to develop societies sustainably. As a result, despite years of international aid, these countries and their economies remain fragile.

Some of the CEDAR’s projects are located in conflict regions, such as Afghanistan and Myanmar. CEDAR Fund supports local partners and church organisations to run development projects in these regions, hoping that the residents can acquire essential skills and knowledge to find resources for their basic needs regardless of any circumstances.

For example, we have been implementing peace and reconciliation projects in Lebanon, India and Rwanda recently. We understand the challenges of building peace in areas full of conflicts and community violence. Yet, we are devoted to standing up for peace as conflicts and violence are the significant causes of poverty. Given the increase in regional conflicts, we must accumulate relevant project experiences to prepare ourselves better to tackle this rising trend.

On November 6, CEDAR and the Centre for Sino-Christian Studies of the Hong Kong Baptist University will jointly hold the “Peacebuilding: A Way Out for Societies in Conflict” Symposium. It will gather local and overseas peacebuilders and scholars in one place to share their thoughts and experiences on bringing restorative transformation in conflict-stricken regions. In the afternoon sessions, we will have various workshops, including sharing of the CEDAR’s peacebuilding projects, to stimulate thoughts on the necessary components of a successful peace process. We hope that this symposium will equip more Christians to live out the faith by responding to local and international needs. Jesus Christ reminded us, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)

May we stand firm for building peace in communities. May our Lord have mercy on us.

In Christ,

Chan Pui Si
