Impact Story

Mrs Pinku Devi, a 40-year-old widow, lives in Choti Salaha village, Kanoujar Panchayat, Samastipur District, Bihar. Her husband, Ram Ashish, used to migrate to other states for work but passed away seven years ago due to illness.

She has three children—two sons and a daughter. Her village lies on the banks of the Bagmati River. Without a stable income, she worked on landlords’ farms, earning Rs. 80 to Rs. 100 per day, and only for around three months a year. This was far from enough to meet her family’s needs.

Although she had the skill to stitch women’s clothes, she could not afford a sewing machine to earn a living. She had sought support from the government and civil society organisations but to no avail.

In 2022, EFICOR began working in her village and formed a Disaster Management Committee (DMC). The project team trained DMC members on their roles and responsibilities, including how to access their rights and entitlements. In one of the monthly meetings, the members discussed income-generating activities (IGA) and nominated Mrs Pinku Devi as a beneficiary. Highlighting that she was a widow with no income but with tailoring skills, the DMC submitted a formal request to EFICOR for a sewing machine.

After the required documentation was completed, Mrs Pinku Devi received a brand-new sewing machine from EFICOR. She was overjoyed that her long-held hope had become reality. She now stitches clothes for women and girls, and also repairs garments, earning Rs. 200 to Rs. 250 per day. With this income, she can support her family and is optimistic about expanding her work to increase her earnings further.
