Relief and Reconstruction in Conflict Zones of Myanmar

A few days ago, we received news from Full Moon, our partner in Myanmar, that a vicious clash had occurred in Karen State. The clash has set villages ablaze and forced many villagers to flee. The affected villages housed some of our partner’s staff and beneficiaries. We consistently contacted our partner, locating the whereabouts of the staff and beneficiaries and discussing possible emergent relief intervention.

On 27 January, our partner informed us that they have finally managed to contact Nor Too Hei* (left photo). In the call, Nor Too Hei had expressed extreme fear and scare. Eventually, she had fled to another village during the clash and hid in a hole she dug for herself. She is still in danger at the time of writing; the area surrounding her is filled with landmines.

We are unable to locate Nor Too Hei’s elderly mother. As the only person in the village who speaks Burmese, she has decided to stay back to help communicate with outsiders. We have also lost contact with two of Full Moon’s staff – Saw Tin Tin, a male social worker and Naw Dar Soe, a female nurse.

Karen state is now in the hands of military forces. Delivery of food and relief supplies is extremely challenging. Food shortage is acute. The area is in the midst of a humanitarian crisis.

As a matter of urgency, CEDAR has allocated US$20,000 to Full Moon to purchase food and necessary supplies. We hope that these supplies will be delivered to those in need as soon as local transportation network re-opens. We urgently plea for your prayers and support for the relief and reconstruction work in Myanmar. If the donation exceeds the above mentioned allocation of funds, the excess amount will be used to support Myanmar’s conflict zone reconstruction, poverty alleviation and development work.
